DIY magazine mogul
What do you do when you’re down to your last fiver, and you might not even have a roof over your head? For Jonny R, the answer wasn’t down the job centre. Instead, he decided to become a magazine writer, editor and publisher. Creating everything from scratch, Jonny crafted a music magazine that he wrote and published himself, and got a local printer to run off for peanuts. He then hand-delivered all 10,000 copies himself for free to anyone with a letterbox and on the route of the number 55 bus.

"It wasn’t much," admits Jonny, "but it did give me the kick up the butt I needed to pull things together. I taught me skills that, when it closed, I managed to blag my way into a real journalism job with real pay – and I went from squatting to renting my own place with the start of a new career. It might not be an amusing story, but it really changed my life and shows you what you can do with some determination, a photocopier and a bus pass."
