Cardboard car creator
It’s the blisteringly hot summer of 2003, and aspiring Bournemouth petrol-head Matt Bath has always dreamed of fast cars. From high-speed head-to-heads with customised Matchbox motors as a kid to a first Mini with go-faster stripes that could nail 60mph downhill – if it had wheels, it had potential. The trouble was, while Si lacked the funds to truly pimp his latest ride (a third-hand royal blue Ford Ka), he didn’t lack creativity. Taking his inspiration from US TV shows on how to customise your wagon, Matt hit on the perfect pimpin’ shortcut. Armed with duct tape, more cardboard than a recycling plant, and waterproof metallic paint, Matt set to work. "I’d worked over several nights to create some truly bitchin’ spoilers on the Ka – not some Blue Peter rush job with bits of sticky-back plastic, but something that would actually turn heads." The result, according to Matt, was astounding. At least, it was until he hit second gear and 20mph. "It did convince a few of the crew on first glance, and from a distance it looked completely mad. The problem was a soon as I got going most of the spoilers blew off, leaving me driving around with several feet of card behind the car. Still, gotta get points for effort."
